Is your student still struggling with COVID-related learning loss and not making up ground? If so, parents, you can help! You are your student’s first and most influential teacher.

Articles, like this one, assert the clarity of data surrounding Covid-related learning loss among students. Yet I don’t see many experts offering parents simple, clear solutions for how to mitigate the losses their students experienced.

So with the unofficial start of summer in the rearview mirror, I’m planning a series of posts for the upcoming weeks, offering some simple, concrete ideas to help parents step into the role of educator and bolster student skills over the summer.

Not convinced you can do it?

You’ve already taught your student many, many things: how to brush their teeth, how to ride a bike, how to follow a recipe, how to write a thank you note, etc.

Because real life skills are often taught mostly by parents, you ARE entirely capable of helping your students make up lost ground in school. This is especially true if you focus on the BIG PICTURE and help them build the underlying skills on which school subject work builds.

I love brainstorming for practical solutions that make room for student creativity and originality, so most of my ideas will be very doable, inexpensive, include the whole family, and promote discussion/interaction.

You won’t see many ideas for remote classes, tutoring, summer camps, etc. because those are ideas you already know well.

Make at-home learning fun and walk alongside your student through the process.
