Reading is the single most important skill you can help your student develop and deepen because it impacts almost every other kind of learning.

A quick internet search of “benefits of reading for children” will yield multiple articles with details on just how much impact reading has. The secret is to help your student LOVE reading so they build a habit that continues to grow their skills effortlessly.

A great (and FREE!) way to start is right at your local library. Librarians are an underutilized resource, but they are a wealth of information because they LOVE reading, know which books are most popular among students of various ages, and can help you find books at the correct reading level for your student.

Go straight to the librarian’s desk and ask for help finding great selections for your student, including books…

  • about a favorite hobby or interest

  • in a favorite genre (adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, etc.)

  • made into movies your family loves

  • from the NYT Young Adult or Children’s Series Best Sellers list

  • comprising a series the whole family can read together throughout the summer

  • in graphic novel format, which is a great gateway for completely unmotivated students

Once you’ve got a stack of books, get your ENTIRE family motivated!
